Magic of fire

11 p.m . It's night, and it's cold. Pepito checks the cones, the temperature is still only 1000°C. We have to change over now to smaller pieces of wood to get to 1300°...

4. p.m. At each load, approxilately every 10 minutes, the kiln breathes out black smoke. The combustion will try and find oxygen hidden within the composition of the clay of the pots and their enamels (reduction firing).

2 a.m. Dauphine and Helen at the side stoke-holes with finely split wood to raise the temperature further at the back of the kiln.
